FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH IN BELOIT ANNOUNCES A SPRING CONCERT SERIES SUNDAYS AT 4 PM IN MAY AND JUNE 2008.
To cheer in the spring season, and to derive full enjoyment from the magnificent grand piano and the large organ in the church, First Congregational Church, 801 Bushnell, Beloit, will be the venue for two more concerts on two Sunday afternoons in May and June 2008. All are invited; admission is free, but a freewill offering will be taken to help the artists with expenses and to guarantee future music events.
On Sunday, May 18, at 4 pm, Max H. Yount, the Director of Music and Organist at the church will present a program of baroque music on the large Rieger-Kloss organ in the church and on the harpsichord. He will play two organ canticles by Buxtehude, three harpsichord pieces by Frescobaldi and Froberger, and two favorite organ fugues of J. S. Bach.
The Spring Series will conclude on Sunday, June 08, at 4 pm, with a piano recital by David Newman, an outstanding pianist newly settled in Beloit, who is listed in Who's Who Among American Keyboard Artists, and who has pursued professional musical life in Chicago, New York and London. Receiving a scholarship for study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England, he studied with Edith Vogel and Joan Havill and earned the highest performing honor, the Concert Recital Diploma. He has served as studio accompanist for a number of famous musicians, including Bernard Greenhouse, cellist with the Beaux Arts Trio. For his program on June 8th, Mr. Newman will offer an unusual piece by contemporary composer, Philip Glass, but also music from the beloved tradition of piano music, including Beethoven's late sonata, Opus 109.
Kenneth Blaine and Travis Barrett have both been prominent performers in Beloit. Kenny was the student soloist with the Beloit Janesville Symphony last March in Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, first movement; he has performed over Wisconsin Public Radio on Sunday Afternoon Live, and he has been a regular pianist in the music program at Second Congregational Church, Beloit. Kenny's senior piano recital is Saturday, April 26, at 6 pm, in Eaton Chapel, Beloit College. He is a student of Professor Renato Premezzi.
Travis Barrett has appeared in musical theater productions and concerts at the college. The community knows Travis from his tenor solo in Messiah in Eaton Chapel last December, and in his star role in The Mikado with the Beloit Janesville Symphony last February. He is a student of Professor Eudora Shepherd at Beloit College, and a regular member of the First Congregational Church Choir. Both Travis and Kenny spent a semester studying in Vienna, Austria. For information call Max Yount 363-2387.
